GETTING AROUND GERMANY RELATED WEB LINKS

Hope you enjoyed my site! There are many other places on the Web with information about Germany and Europe- here are links to some great sites:

DRIVING & ROADS
  • Embrace Europe -- Living in Europe - by Sharon Anscomb: Great book covering everything soon-to-be expatriates will need to know when moving to Germany. Has links to other sites of interest.
  • Expatriates Living & Working in Germany- by Rod Pettit: Includes information for foreigners living in Germany including permits, housing, and-- you guessed it-- driving, including a good section on getting a license. There are also quite a few links to related resources.
  • Europe Highways - by Mark Furqueron: Some pictures of European road signs.
  • German Car Scene- by Brian Zahn: A good collection of links to sites about western and eastern German cars, traffic signs, and driving.
  • USAREUR Driver's Manual and related documents: This site has a collection of links designed mainly for US military personnel transferring to Germany including downloadable versions of the Driver's Handbook and Exam manual and a handy (although not well-organized) pocket guide to German road signs. There's also info on the requirements to register a POV.
  • Moto Europa: Driving information for all of Europe. If the section on Germany sounds a little familiar, it should. Most of the information for it came from my pages! (I don't mind-- it's kind of flattering!)
  • Clever-Tanken: Looking for cheap gas in Germany? This site has a searchable database of the cheapest stations by town! (In German-- at the top of the page [under "Schnellsuche"], select the fuel grade in the"Kraftstoff Sorte" box and type in the name of the town in the "Ort/Plz" box. Then click the right arrow.)
  • Autobahn.de: Some basic statistics and other information about the German autobahns. (In German)
  • Route planners & distance calculators-
RAIL TRAVEL
  • Deutsche Bahn (German) (English)- The DB's excellent web presence includes information on the various types of trains, maps, and timetables. There is also an English timetable site.
  • The German Way- by Hyde Flippo: A great online version of the book by the same name. Several topics related to German trains are covered.
  • The ICE/ICT pages- by Tobias Bejamin Köhler: Great history and collection of technical information about all generations of current and future ICE and ICT trains.
  • Eurail- Information about Eurail passes.
  • Erik's Rail News- by Erik Sandblom: All the latest news about trains around the world.
  • Railways in Germany- by Hisayuki HUH, Yasuhiro Sakurai, Michael Froemmel: Lots of information about and pictures of German trains.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
  • EuroMetro- by Robert Schwandl: A complete guide to European metro, subway, U-Bahn, T-bana or underground networks.
  • Public Transport- by Thomas Purkert: Collection of details about public transport in lots of cities worldwide.
  • Subway Navigator- Allows you to plan routes on subway systems in various cities around the world.

The agencies above are the regional transit cooperatives for the largest German metropolitan areas. In most areas, several independent transit systems operate under the regional umbrella agency. For a map showing many of these as well as the transit systems in some smaller cities, see the ÖPNV site.
